Frequently asked questions...

Wooden gates

1. My driveway is an unusual size, can you make me gates to fit?
Yes, all our gates are made to measure within certain size restrictions.

2. Whats the difference between an open boarded gate and a close boarded gate?
Our close boarded gates have tongue and groove boarding fitted into them meaning you cannot see through the boarding. In an open boarded gate the tongue and groove boarding is replaced by timber infill with gaps of no more than 2" (50mm) between each piece of timber infill meaning that the gates can be seen through. An example of an open boarded gate can be viewed here.

3. Is it possible for you to make me a gate without the rails and braces showing on the rear?
Yes, this is called double boarded and can be done at additional cost - for more information please see our double boarded gate page here.

4. How thick are your gates?
All our gates are EX 3" (75mm) thick finishing at aprox 2 3/4" (69mm) thick. EX refers to the sawn size of the timber.

5. Are you gates suitable for automation?
All our gates can be modified to accept automation, for above ground automation we double brace the rear of the gates and for below ground automation we manufacture the gates with a solid EX 6" (EX 150mm) solid bottom and double brace the gates. Please see our wooden gates suitable for automation page.

6. I need a pair of gates for my driveway, but due to lack of space I need one gate bigger than the other -
can this be done?

Yes, this can be done with the Keswick, Coniston, Kendal and Grasmere gates but is not suitable for the Derwent or Thirlmere or Curved headed gates.

7. I have my own design in mind for some gates I need, can you manufacture them for me?
I am sure we can. If you would like us to take a look at them for you then please email, fax or post a sketch to us. For more information then please see our bespoke gate page here.

8.Can you supply the automation system for the gates?
Yes, we act as agents for Came and can supply any of Came's products. More details wil appear on our website shortly, please contact us for further information.

Wooden garage doors

1. Do you manufacture 'up and over' garage doors?
No, we manufacture traditional side hung wooden garage doors, bi-folding doors and sliding doors.

2. My garage is not a standard sized opening, can you still make me something to fit?
Yes, all our wooden garage doors are made to measure within certain size restrictions.

3. Are the garage doors rebated in the centre where the two doors meet?
All our garage doors (unless you request otherwise) have as standard a rebated meeting stile (i.e. the doors overlap when closed).

4. How thick are your garage doors?
All our garage doors are EX 2" (50mm) thick finishing at approx 1 3/4" (44mm) thick. EX refers to the sawn size of the timber.

5. Can you also supply a frame for the garage doors?
Yes we can supply garage door frames with the doors, these are suppilied all pre-jointed up ready for assembly. Please see our garage door frames page for more information.

6. Can you supply the glass for the Conway or Elwy garage doors?
Unfortunately we no longer offer this service.

7.Can I hang my garage doors using butt hinges?
We do not recommend using butt hinges to hang your garage doors due to the greater weight of these compared to say front doors. Also in the main garage doors open out and if hung using butt hinges and the wind was to catch the doors then in all probability the door would be ripped off the frame. It is recommended that you use band and gudgeon hinges to hang your doors.

8. I have my own design in mind for my wooden garage doors, can you manufacture them for me?
If you can let us have a sketch or picture of the design you require then we are happy to take a look at it for you. For more information on the details require please see our bespoke gate page .

Ironmongery

1.Can you supply a mortice deadlock suitable to lock my gates?
Mortice deadlocks can be supplied to fit our range of gates. See here for more information Mortice deadlocks

2. Is your ironmongery available in black as well as galvanised?
All the ironmngery we supply is available in black as well as galvanised with following exceptions - Garage door holders (black only), Lockable dropbolts (galv only), mortice deadlocks / sashlocks (polished brass only) and brass handles.

3. I already have a pair of doors/ gates, but need some ironmongery can you supply just ironmongery?
No problem, we can supply all our gate ironmongery and garage door ironmongery indivually of our gates and doors, please contact us with your requirements.

4. What are garage door holders?
Garage door holders fit onto the inside top edge of the garage doors and underside of your frame/lintel. When you open your garage doors they lock into place holding the doors open, to close the doors simply release the holders by pulling the cord. For more information on the garage door holders please see here.

5. Whats the difference between a mortice deadlock and mortice sashlock?
A mortice sashlock has a lock as well as a latch - the lock can be opened from either side by use of the keys, whilst the latch can be opened from either side by use of a pair of handles. A mortice deadlock just has the lock which again can be opened from either side by use of the keys supplied.

6. Whats a rebate kit for?
A rebate kit is used when fitting either a mortice sashlock or deadlock to a pair of doors with rebated meeting stiles (i.e. the doors overlap when closed) such as our garage doors.

7.I need several mortice deadlocks / sashlocks, but only want one key to open them all - is this possible?
Yes, this is called keyed alike locks these are available as a special order for both the mortice deadlocks and mortice sashlocks.
